Mamba Strikes, Knicks Survive, and the Green Wave Keeps Rolling
A Wednesday night at East Shoreline Catholic Academy delivered a 31-point eruption, a seven-steal takeover, and a two-point thriller — proof that this league still has plenty to sort out down the stretch.
A Wednesday night at East Shoreline Catholic Academy delivered a 31-point eruption, a seven-steal takeover, and a two-point thriller — proof that this league still has plenty to sort out down the stretch.
Around the League
Black Mamba 63, Huskies 51. Ryan Florentine did everything humanly possible to keep the Huskies afloat, pouring in a game-high 31 points with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 threes — the kind of night that usually wins ballgames. This one didn’t, because Black Mamba answered with a balanced barrage. Colby Morawski led the way with 20 points, 8 boards and 3 assists, Mike Iannuzzi splashed 4 threes on his way to 12, and Samim Jabarkhail stuffed the sheet with a 10-point, 11-rebound, 5-assist double-double. Don’t overlook Dan Greif, either — 11 points, 8 rebounds and a game-swinging 5 steals. Scott Houghton chipped in 16 for the Huskies, but 12 was the final margin.
Green Wave 47, Red Storm 37. In a defensive rock fight, Jimmy Giorlamo turned the game into his personal highlight reel: 21 points, 7 steals, 2 blocks and 3 threes. When you’re single-handedly generating that many turnovers, the scoreboard tends to follow. Jeremy McDonald backed him up with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, adding 4 steals of his own. Red Storm’s David Orr was terrific in a losing effort — 19 points and 10 boards — but got too little help around him, as Branden LaPia’s 7 was the next-best line. Green Wave 47, Red Storm 37.
Knicks 44, Bulldogs 42. The nightcap was the nail-biter. The Knicks held on by a bucket behind Taylor Houghton’s double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) and 12 from Alex Hetherington, who hit a pair of threes. Brian Jackson was a menace on the perimeter with 5 steals to go with 6 points and 7 boards. The Bulldogs made them sweat: Anthoni Reyes dropped 16 with 3 triples and 4 steals, and Dimitrios Varrias added a well-rounded 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Two points was all that separated them — and for the Bulldogs, close games are becoming a painful theme.
The Standings
The Green Wave remain kings of the hill, extending to a W2 streak and a league-best +58 point differential atop the table. The Huskies hold second despite Florentine’s brilliance going for naught, snapping into an L1 after the loss to Black Mamba. The night’s biggest riser is the Knicks, whose two-point win pushed them up a spot into third and stretched their streak to W2. That climb came at the expense of Red Storm, who slid to fourth on an L2 skid. Black Mamba snapped a rough patch with a feel-good W1, while the Bulldogs, despite a spirited near-miss, remain winless since way back — that heartbreaker dropped them to L7.

Movers & Shakers
Bucket of the week: Ryan Florentine takes it in a walk. His 31-point, 9-rebound, 4-three showing was the highest scoring line on the floor by a full ten points — a one-man show, even in defeat.
Two-way terror: Jimmy Giorlamo paired 21 points with a league-leading 7 steals and 2 blocks. Nobody bent a game to their will quite like him this week.
The scoring board rounded out with Colby Morawski (20), David Orr (19), and a 16-point tie between Scott Houghton and Anthoni Reyes.
Category kings: Paul Votto cleaned the glass with a week-high 11 rebounds for Black Mamba, Samim Jabarkhail dished a week-best 5 assists, and Sean Perkins anchored the paint with 4 blocks for the Huskies.
Double-double club: four members this week — Jabarkhail (10 & 11), Orr (19 & 10), McDonald (13 & 10), and Taylor Houghton (13 & 10). Do-it-all nights, every one.
See you next Wednesday.
